World Breastfeeding Week 2024

1 August 2024

World Breastfeeding Week
2024 theme “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all”

This week aims to highlight the significant impact of breastfeeding on the health of children and mothers, particularly in middle and low-income countries, as well as its role in reducing poverty and increasing food security.

Key facts:

  • Optimal breastfeeding from 0-23 months could save over 820 000 children’s lives annually among children under 5 years (sources: Infant and young child feeding data, WHO)
  • About 48% of infants under𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟰𝟴% 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗱, while the target rate by 2030 is 70% (sources: 2023 SOFI report)
  • Not breastfeeding results in 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗦$ 𝟱𝟳𝟰 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 (sources: The Global Cost of Not Breastfeeding, Nutrition International)

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of infant mortality by 12 to 20%, decreases the risk of overweight and obesity, and protects mothers against chronic diseases. It is essential to support mothers so they can breastfeed effectively.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding period, nutritional needs increase significantly, often making it challenging to meet in undernutrition contexts.
