When it was established, the factory produced vitamin A-enriched sugar and iodized salt for United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the general public.
In 2006, a meeting with UNICEF made Hilina a new member of the PlumpyField® network and marked a decisive turning point in this partnership, enabling the local provision of the Plumpy’Nut product. Since then, Hilina has greatly expanded and continued to equip itself with state-of-the-art production lines, mainly for the manufacture of ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) for children, and to compensate for the significant lack in the national agri-food production system.
Today, Hilina has 286 employees and is one of the most impactful social company in Ethiopia: each product made on site is a strong commitment to the health and well-being of the Ethiopian community.

Plumpy’Nut®, nicknamed 'nefis aden' in Amharic, which means 'the taste of life', is a true beacon of hope in the fight against severe acute malnutrition among children in Ethiopia. At Hilina, we are not only proud to promote this 'miracle' product, but also to actively participate in the economic development of our country. By sourcing 70% of our raw materials locally, we forge strong connections with our community, thereby reinforcing our commitment to the health and well-being of our children and the sustainable development of Ethiopia.
