Plumpy’Doz™ & SMC

The effects of Plumpy’Doz™ combined with Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) in Burkina Faso

Adding a nutritional supplement such as Plumpy’Doz™ to SMC significantly increases the impact of this intervention in preventing malaria and other childhood infections in children.

This addition had an effect on the incidence of malaria:

• 23% reduction in the probability of developing uncomplicated malaria
• 52% reduction in the probability of developing severe malaria.

In addition to the effect on malaria, this combined strategy had an effect on the morbidity of supplemented children from all causes:

• 24% reduction in the risk of morbidity

All of these effects were observed in the SMC + vitamin A + Plumpy’Doz™ group compared with the control group.
